Role Type: Full time
A hydropower / renewable energy engineer (or engineer with related experience) is required to join the UK’s leading small hydropower engineering, design and project development consultancy. Most likely you are an experienced graduate mechanical or civil engineer with at least five years relevant experience. Our projects are based all over the UK and range from lowland, low head / high flow projects to high head / low flow projects in mountainous regions. Power outputs are typically in the 100 kW to 1 MW range.
You would be working on the design and engineering support during the construction of some of the UK’s premium hydropower projects. Ideally you would be very multi-skilled with additional knowledge of electrical engineering, an appreciation of ecology and planning and be the kind of person that doesn’t mind going out to site and getting your hands dirty. Our work is broad in scope, varied and interesting – something which the right person will love. You would spend most of your time in the office, but visits to sites all over the UK for meetings and sometimes hands-on work would be a regular occurrence.
Our companies strives to deliver the highest quality consultancy services, so is looking for staff that have attention to detail, depth of understanding and are proud to deliver a good job. We also offer whole-project capability, so practical / construction knowledge and practical skills are important as well as technical ability. We are a commercial business that survives through making a profit, so the applicant must be commercially aware and have that ability to know what needs doing to keep the customer happy, get the job done and not get distracted. Some people struggle with this, some people thrive on it. Clearly we want to recruit people in the latter category.
Useful skills would include a good working knowledge of AutoCAD, design and specification experience (civils, mechanical or both, depending on your background), electrical knowledge, experience of technical analysis and writing concise technical reports, knowledge of how to handle public-sector consenting officials is always useful along with a good practical understanding of how concrete structures are constructed on the ground and mechanical / electrical plant installed. An appreciation of budgets and timescales would also be useful. You need to be able to deliver fee-earning outputs and keep the project scope in focus. This includes maintaining good communication with the client and having the drive to keep going when projects get complicated and deadlines loom.
Our office is located in a beautiful watermill in the Stroud valley, so is ideal for someone who likes to work in a pleasant environment. The office and staff are a friendly collaborative group so we are looking for someone who fits in well with that ethos.
