Investing in Hydropower

In the current economic climate investing in hydropower is one of the few areas where a secure long-term income is available. Provided that good quality sites are selected and developed using good quality hardware, the returns can be extremely attractive.

Renewables First works with a range of investors who are looking for suitable investment sites, from investment banks looking to secure a large portfolio of sites to small private investors looking to invest in a single or small numbers of sites.

For larger clients we will put together a bespoke site-finding and project development service to identify suitable sites, complete the initial site screening works and then obtain an Exclusivity Agreement to develop the site. Once signed, the site would follow our standard development process (see here for hydro and here for wind). Once the feasibility works had been completed we would get an Option Agreement signed, and then move ahead into the consenting stages. Once the appropriate consents were obtained the Option would be exercised and the Lease signed, and then the system would be installed and commissioned.

For private individuals and smaller investors we can generally match investors with suitable sites that are looking for investment. Depending on how much risk an investor wants, they can buy-in to the project at the initial site screening stage and then fund the feasibility and planning works, or for a premium fee can buy-in at the post-feasibility stage once some of the development risk has been removed.
